“A Colorful Learning Experience”
Carbondale Public Library project was a concept design to replace the existing library with a newer library with advanced technology. The traditional idea of a library would have one to think, are public libraries even needed anymore? Public libraries are public records of documents and books that need to be available cheaply or cost-free for everyone. They can be outdated and empty these days, but they must exist for those that prefer books, need material for research, and/or have no other way to get to the internet. They also serve as repositories for all kinds of books, newspapers, and other printed media products that need to exist somewhere for everyone to see them, as an independent record of everything that has happened. And they must be public to avoid bias. We wanted to create a library that was more than a place to store public records by incorporating social gathering spaces, coffee shops, and playgrounds for the community to enjoy and utilize. The idea behind the color scheme of the building exterior cladding was to purposely grab car-goers attention as they drove down Main Street.
